    Just Strange

Alright, this is just very strange to me. I was checking out the TBWA blog, and came across this ad (top image) from TBWA France. Once i saw this ad titled “COPS”, I immediatly thought of the cannes grand prix winner for VW by DDB London (bottom image).

What is TBWA trying to do here? It’s not a spoof becuase a Golf is hardly in the same class as the 300Z. Everything is the same except that this time the cops are protecting the car except being protected by it. I don’t know what else to say. What do you think?

It needs explanation? It is a parody. The car is so pretty that the policemen had decided to protect it.
      I like.

I do understand the ad and what its trying to say. I just don’t understand why they took the cannes grand prize winning layout that was done for the Golf by DDB London.

They could have shown the same idea with a different visual. Even the cars are the exact same.

Their love for the 300z is so big that the cops choose to protect it with their own lives (as opposed to the vice versa in the VW ad). On it’s own it’s a mediocre ad. If you know the VW ad, it’s slightly more interesting (but not much). On the whole, it’s lazy.

It’s a parody that’s why they tried to make everything look exactly the same except for the idea.

If I had come up with the original idea, I would have been flattered. The VW one is funnier though: sadly, being shot for a car is not that uncommon after all.

i dont think it communicates quickly enough. its puzzling at first.. then you just think “ohhhh… why?”

As parody it’s funny, but as ad it’s lame. You wouldn’t get the idea of it, if you didn’t know the VW ad.

I agree to you, Lucien. It is an announcement for people in advertising and, therefore, I distrust that it does not pass of an announcement for prize, propagated in some magazine that nobody goes to read. Perhaps either this that the TBWA intends with this announcement. But it’s funny.

Fun parody (nice), self-referential insider silliness (not nice).

The Z ad says to me, “Hey, remember how we won that bitchin’ award? Well, you know, this is kinda funny…”

FWIW, the VW ad is for the Polo, not the Golf.

I didn’t know about that Nissan.

[…] This post from Freddy made me remember of some identical ads. Unfortunately I don’t know the origin, but it looks that cops love small cars! […]

It kind of looks like two different ads. The VW is easy, it says “small but tough”, That’s why the cops are behind it. and the 350 is the best car ever created, ever, so they will risk their life to protect it from damage. Other than that, no idea. It’s a very poor ad.

I think you got this backwards, shouldn’t it be the french hiding behind it?
