This is a perfect example of what happens when guerilla advertising goes wrong. Sony has not officially endorsed the various pieces of art, and claimed to be “unaware” of such a campaign.
However, claims on the Internet are that Sony paid for the characters to be painted onto public and private property as an advertising campaign. The characters were all very well created, and all were somehow playing with Sony’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) console.
