Sony Bravia
This amazing new Sony Bravia TV ad featuring massive paint explosions took 10 days and 250 people to film. Huge quantities of paint were needed to accomplish this, which had to be delivered in 1 tonne trucks and mixed on-site by 20 people. I personally like this one a lot better than Balls.
Agency: Fallon, London.

Interesting. Would have probably been better if they did this in multiple locations, but good none the less. Why is there a scary clown running through the scene though? (ok ok, I’m afraid of clowns, sheesh).

Get the higher quality one from http://www.bravia-advert.com/ and check out the behind the scenes!

It feels less magical and spontaneous then balls. In balls, they let them go and watched what happened, this one was more planned and felt more gratuitous.
October 18th, 2006 at 8:50 am
Lacks completely the spirit and freshness of the balls. And I don’t get the wierd reference to ‘ a clockwork orange’… Sorry they missed that ball or I missed the boat completely here. Anyhow, good riddance.

Are you guys crazy? This is way better than Balls. Just look at the amount of work that was put into this ad. In the one before, they just threw balls down the road. Sure, it was more random but the paint is just visually stunning. What else do you want????
October 18th, 2006 at 9:09 am
hmm putting a huge amount of work doesn’t mean the outcome is always better. I feel that the ball is more beautiful and colorful than this one, the main thing that make me feel that way should be because of the location, and also at the end where all the color mixed together after rain down, i don’t get the brightness and colorful feeling (which is the point they want to sell)
as for the clown, if clown runs away from something, u better run faster! (Color Paint Explosion!)

Looks like some parts were digitally enhanced.
October 18th, 2006 at 9:49 am
Ok, since when is the amount of time put in an ad a reference for the quality?? This ad is NOT equally waauw as Balls. It’s not visually stunning and the music lacks the mystic character tha Ball commercial had.
October 18th, 2006 at 9:57 am
I love this one more than balls. Maybe it’s how well it all comes together and flows with the music. (It’s insane how much planning must have gone into this) Either way, it just seems better planned, which makes for more of a spectacle.
Don’t get me wrong, balls was good too….just in a different way.
October 18th, 2006 at 10:19 am
glad to see i am not the only one who is completely bored with this one.

“I personally like this one a lot better than Balls.”
“I love this one more than balls. ”
“This is way better than Balls.”
“It feels less magical and spontaneous then balls.”
I promised myself I wouldn’t die of convulsive snickering at these lines until I read this one:
“Lacks completely the spirit and freshness of the balls. ”
Hwarf! Blerb! Gwalf*!
*I’m choking on my toungue laughing . Sorry for the immaturity.

I think that the music selection plays a huge part as well. The song in the first one was amazing and really helped create that feeling that it did. Visually I am aiming more towards this one though.
October 18th, 2006 at 11:11 am
I definetly like it very much, but the simplicity of the colour balls has something so right. I just loved that one. But this is a well executed stunt.

For those who prefer the balls commercial, go back and watch that again. I’ll stay here enjoying this new one, wich is equaly beatyfull to look at.
It may not be as romantic as the balls, but it is still surreal. Perhaps if none of us had seen the balls commercial first, we would be happy about this. Well, I know I am. Doing the same thing wouldn’t be nice.

Simply one of my favorite campaigns of all time.
Balls will always be my favorite but I think that’s because of the “wow” factor having never seen the concept before. The first time I saw it - it took my breath away a little. Once you see one of these - it takes a little something away from the others. Not that any of them are bad AT ALL.

I think the neighberhoud where they filmed this looks boring and abandoned (I have to think about East Germany) while the ad with the balls was filmed in the exciting city of San Francisco.

Hey Bart, it’s shot in Ireland, not east Germany.
October 18th, 2006 at 1:37 pm
#1 - FYI - It’s filmed in Glasgow, Scotland.
#2 - I agree whole-heartedly with those who like Balls better. This is so lifeless and mundane in comparison. Just because they can blow up paint and synchronize it with music, doesn’t give the piece any “heart”. The Balls video was mystical - largely because of the music. To me, this one felt perfunctory in comparion. It just didn’t have any of that “heart”. Just technically brilliant–which we all know, is not enough to really make a lasting impression.

should have picked a more relevant location… and some landmarks to play with, that would make a better impression. still like the idea but could have been executed better.
why not just do it digitally?

‘The amount of work…’: What kind of BS is that! It’s not because it took a lot of work (although they sure did more postproduction then they want us and all juries to believe) that it’s a good film. I’m sure this will win a lot of prizes but for the wrong reasons. It took a lot of work, Jonathan Glazer was the director, bla bla bla… Sorry homies but I trust my instinct and it says: This movie is a sequel to Sony Bravia Balls as Terminator 3 to Terminator 1 & 2, just to give an example. It sure lacks the spirit and magic of the first one. What’s next noitulove 2 ?
October 18th, 2006 at 2:58 pm
I agree with the above statement about the location.
I think the real killer for this ad was not the concept, but the fact that it was filmed in a graffiti covered abandoned building in the middle of nowhere.
While it might be Ireland, it LOOKS like somewhere in old soviet Russia or East Germany.
The other thing that makes this add less-than stunning, is the fact that the paint doesn’t quite fill the space in the same way the balls filled the street.
The paint seems dwarfed by the sparse surroundings and the large buildings. I know they used thousands of gallons of paint, but I think this add could have used even more!

I realy don’t like the location. When i saw some making of in the oficial site my expectations were BIG! if someone watches the making of and some amateur videos from youtube you can see clearly that they didn’t do really good job in the editing~music~bla bla. But i will always wonder how would the ad look like is it was in Athens ~ Acropolis or Paris Eifel Tower.
Cheers!

The thing I hate about this one is how dark and moody it seems. It doesn’t have that uplifting character that the balls commercial had for me. The location (as already said) and the purple paint that it seems they used the most are making it too dark and depressing. Also what is with the paint that rains at the end looking like a blood shower. Needless to say, they could’ve done a much better job with all that money they spent on it.
October 19th, 2006 at 8:05 am
I found it a bit too much.
Though it was without a doubt very cost intensive the way it was filmed looks a bit cheap.
The first one was really great and cool, because it was new and nobody has done something like that before.
The second one is just a very expensive sequel, nothing more.
And who needs a clown by the way???
October 19th, 2006 at 8:21 am
You like this one better than the Balls?? Well, I must disagree :)… I just don’t get the same vibe from this one compared to the balls… I think there was too much hype around this one and they just didn’t deliver…
October 19th, 2006 at 10:11 am
I’m with the Balls crowd on this one. The paint doesn’t do as much for me. I agree, largely due to the music. It’s by no means a bad spot. I’m not bashing it, I just don’t think they’ve topped themselves yet.
October 19th, 2006 at 10:19 am
Anyday that you can use client money to blow up paint is a good day. Very cool. I do have a soft soft spot for the ball spot. Maybe because it’s less messy.
October 19th, 2006 at 11:05 am
Bring the balls commercial back!!!

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And kill that stupid Mcdonalds clown!
I was expecting too much for this new ad.
And I’m VERY disappointed.
October 19th, 2006 at 10:30 pm
doesnt do it for me. i assume they chose that area as it looks like it is about to be bulldozed for redevelopment. otherwise the approvals from the relative council would be difficult.
i find the recent spate of sony ads horrible. the balls in the street was lovely but who cleaned up, all this paint, the sponsoring on new years eve in taipei… on and on. its just a bit too much on the power of what $ can do V the ingenious

Jose Gonzales turned balls into an ad where you really felt emotionally engaged in the ad. It really juxtaposed the images and added a uniqueness and charm to it.
I would have liked to have seen a similar route taken for this ad. It’s almost as if they didn’t have confidence in the visual idea itself so felt they had to create added impact with the music. As a result it all seems a little bit too forced and it comes across as a bit try hard.
Or maybe I’m just jealous of their budget.

Personally I like the ball ad better. For this, it’s like fireworks, you can make people feel wow, but it is just for that particular moment.
For the ball one, it’ll definitely leave deeper impression because it was unique and bring back the childhood memories (by seeing the balls jumping here and there)
When I saw this paint version, the first thought I had was instead “Hell, this is pollution!”
October 22nd, 2006 at 2:01 am
Balls ad was better.
October 22nd, 2006 at 3:57 pm
this one feels plain… besides all the amount of work as mentioned above by someone. Even thou it’s BIG, you would definetely expect something BETTER coming from Jonathan Glazer.
October 27th, 2006 at 12:06 am
Liked “balls” better. My 3 1/2 year old son loves them both. I think he likes the marching music better.
I wanted to buy “Heartbeats” 4 seconds into the “Balls” spot.
There’s no way they could have gotten a second one to live up to the first one. In the little Behind-the-scenes segement on the Bravia site, the director talks of consciously not try to just do “Balls” again. I like that it is different.
What will they do to top these?
October 30th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
i think the bland locale was chosen specifically so that the paint erruptions would be all the more spectacular.
visually, i like this one a lot better than balls.

The idea appears to owe at least a nod to the fireworks display at the climax in the otherwise flawed film V for Victory, complete with classical soundtrack
