BC Hyrdro
For five days last week in a parking lot in downtown Vancouver, this billboard was lit around the clock by pedal power to demonstrate the energy efficiency of LED lights. The DDB/Vancouver project, on behalf of BC Hydro, required some 120 volunteers — from the client, the agency and local organizations — to keep the 1,500 LED lights aglow. According to BC Hydro, if the billboard featured traditional mini incandescent bulbs, only 120 lights could be lit with the same amount of energy.
Agency: DDB, Canada.

That’s a really cool demonstration. Now if only LED lighting was more available in the domestic market…

I think it’s absolute crap. A total creative wank to win awards. Or at least try to. I sure hope it doesn’t.
I will admit one thing, it is a stupid enough idea that I’m sure it generated some media attention. But then again, so does Paris Hilton. Enuf said.

I walked by this one day; it was pouring out and the poor girl riding the bicycle looked rather miserable. My first thought was ‘I hope they are paying her enough’, well turns out she was a volunteer!
My question is, why couldn’t BC Hydro pay them? Why shouldn’t it pay them?

That was a really good demonstration of the energy efficiency of LED lighting, I hope that at least planted the seed in a few peoples minds to look further into this emerging technology. If you want to try some for home use, about the best price I’ve seen on them is at http://www.shop.donsgreenstore.com . They only use 2 or 3 watts and last 50,000 hours or more.
