    Compaq Rebranding

Compaq has updated their logo, and now it looks like they are putting a lot of focus on the “Q”. They went away from the italic feel and also went with a more rounded typeface. But for some reason the new logo feels a little outdated and I think they could have done a litte more work on. Looks like the typeface was chosen becuase they like how the “Q” looked. It’s a good change from the old logo, which did need a little facelift.

What are your thoughts on this?

I like the old logo a lot more. Yes it needed a facelift. I think they just took two steps back with this new logo. The type feels dated the “Q” doesn’t work. It doesn’t feel as strong as the old logo. Oh well.

While it’s much improved from the old one, I still think it sucks. Not only does it look like it came out of the eighties, it’s not sufficiently notable to create any brand association.

It still sucks. It’s a little better than the old one. I like the new Q, but I hate the rounded corners and the boxy typeface.

I get more of a space feel from the new logo than I do a company to look to for technology. Now that I look at it, some of the letters seem to take some of their form from the NASA font.

I still like the old one - not as in “like it better” but as “still really like”. Can’t even put my finger on it why …

I like the old one better. I’ve always liked the Compaq logo. The new one doesn’t feel right. I particularly don’t like how the “tick” in the Q is hanging out there. It has a negative feel to it, like someone sticking their tounge out.

The old logo is an example of a timeless design, the new one an example of a 90’s design. I really don’t understand why they did this.

The new logo is a bit similar to my elmanco logo but i don’t like it so much. Sure the old logo needed a redisign, but it could be better.

New logo reminds me of caculators and alarm clocks. That can’t be good for a computer brand.

Yea, not loving it. The old one was a little outdated, yes, but it didn’t scream old-fashioned. The new one is just missing something…

I do not see this new logo as a good step for COMPAQ. Indeed they want simplicity and HP intend is to offer simple computers with no fancy stuff, the thing that you want with no much fuss. But for this, I do not think that they have to go back in the 90s

The old logo looks circa 90s and the new one lokks circa 70’s. The CEO must have picked it.

The old logo is timeless, the new one reminds me a lot of the Namco’s logo and to the mid-late 90s futuristic typos that got perempted so quickly…
      What the fuck ????

There’s more to it than just esthetics. Compaq’s parentbrand HP needed to distinguish Compaq from HP computers. The Q (which is in fact a CQ) will be the new icon which will function -very ambitious - like the swoosh does for Nike. A new logo was neccesary to communicate that Compaq has changed, and expresses on what markets the Compaq brand is aiming: SME and families. Read more about it on http://mattus.web-log.nl/vibe_visual_brand_experie/2007/08/c.html, that is, if you can read Dutch. If not, enjoy the John Cleese add.

The old logo is still quite good. Maybe a refresh could have helped, but a full redesign was not needed. The new logo is completely derivative - like somebody went to FreeFonts.com and searched for ‘tech font’.

I’ll go with most others here - new logo feels very dated, like early-90s dated. The old one felt late-90s dated. The just need find a good solid logo that isn’t build around their name, like some sort of creative “Q” logo and use that.

I definitely like more the previous version. Timeless and more sturdy. The new one fits more for an Industrial Design Office Furniture. 5/5 for the old one; 3/5 for the new one. Visit my site for new logos and updates. If you have logos to offer to merca-web email them, vectorized to: jp.rojasw@merca-web.com Thanks.
