    iPod Touch

Nick Haley, an 18 year old from England loved the iPod Touch so much that he created his own commercial and put it up on YouYube. The people from Apple saw it and liked it so much that they contacted him and decided to “buy” the rights to it. You can see Nick’s version on top, and the actual produced spot on the bottom.

Is there something I am missing. Didn’t the original campaign for the Ipod phone pretty much do the same thing? Why would they have to buy the rights to it if they already owned it and did it. Am I missing something here did this guy do something original? If so I totally appologize for asking but I am confused.

I’m excited for this guy, mostly because he actually had a good idea and it’s actually being used.

Just another good example of the consumer influencing control over “their” brands. Whether or not he did anything original is beside the point. What matters is that he DID something and Apple NOTICED. How many brands of “yours” react that way?

Great post, but very poor ad. It’s not creative at all, it’s almost like an infomercial.

Well I’d guess the reason they had to buy it from him is because they didn’t want it to say Mac + PC. Wouldn’t want people to realize there’s another alternative BESIDES apple, would they. I’ll stick with two mouse buttons and a Sansa

But no creative concept there. But very poor ad. It’s not creative at all, it’s almost like an infomercial. Guys. Cut the BS. What did you make when you were 18 year old boy? Did you even have this much passion?

Good job, son. Keep it up!

Not a great ad by any stretch of the imagination. But maybe it was worth sacrificing a better ad for the extra publicity this story has gathered.

    18. Brandman Says:
      November 5th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Yes, the ad itself technically is no good. But remember to look at the big picture.

It’s *brilliant* PR, and that’s why it works. Apple knew that buying this student ad would make waves in the blogosphere, and would further trumpet its brand-consumer relations. Plus, the coincidentally perfect lyrics of the song, and amazing catchiness didn’t hurt either.

Look on iTunes (owned by Apple) at the newfound popularity of CSS’s song “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex.” It actually knocked “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” off its perch as most popular song for that band, which was being played all over the place. “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” is selling ringtones like hotcakes.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

I actually feel (sort of) bad for the agency; imagine having Apple as a client and having them tell you to make something a random kid made. For such a beautiful product as the touch too. Owch!
