Best Buy Rebranding
Best Buy has gone through a nice rebranding job. I like the new modern looking font, and the fact that they kept the tag. I think it was time for a little refresh on the old outdated logo. This works well for them.
Your thoughts?

Wal-Mart is that you?… I think this is unfortunate–very unfortunate.

I think it’s great to see them finally move away from their old logo, and perhaps my attitude about the new logo will change with time, but at first glance it feels pretty generic.

The new logo is more “tasteful” in the sense that it is more anonymous, but the real question is whether something fundamentally has changed about Best Buy that requires a re-branding. Are they under new management? Are they targeting a more affluent clientele? Being bored may be a good reason for a person to change hairstyles, but a profit-oriented company ought to have a more compelling reason than “we’re bored” before dumping signage, ugly as it is, that still has considerable equity and recognition.

I don’t like it.
I think they should have kept the name IN the tag, and maybe just updated the font, and possibly the shape, slightly. I guess I’ll wait for all the rest of their branding before I say I hate it, but I thought they had a really good logo already.

This new one is an improvement, (as the previous logo was truly horrendous) but I would be completely confused if I saw this logo, then walked into the mess that is a BestBuy store.
I see ‘web 2.0 finance service’ or ‘navy-blue facebook button’ when I look at the new logo… While I hated BB’s old logo, it at least implied fun and entertainment.
This should have been the approach BB applied to the Magnolia A/V brand (which they totally botched).
As I said, an improvement… but I’m not completely convinced that they can ‘grow into’ their new image.

Much, much better. I like it. The old logo was just painful to look at.

I like the adjusted weight of the font. However, between the adjustment of font and color, this is a pretty significant change in identity. While the tag remains, it bares little resemblance to the existing Best Buy logo.
If I were to make a small adjustment, I might try filling the tag with solid yellow to maintain some of the company’s existing brand identity.

Old one was better! Title in the tag. Maybe yellow color can be changed.

I agree with Bendy. The first thing I saw when I looked at it was the Facebook Button. It’s not bad though, but at the same time it’s not a very subtle rebranding and could be confusing to some.

Definitely better. The old one looks like a relic from the Office 97′ ClipArt era. I like the subtle tag outline too.

It’s the new one that looks old – already. With the colors and the font it could be practically any company. Boring and does not stand out. The old logo doesn’t look a bit outdated.

I think it is nicer, as you said, the font, etc. But I can’t help but feel that it looks like a logo from a web bargain site that you always ignore when searching for products on Google. You don’t know whether to trust it with your credit card or not.

I like that they kept the tag, but the blue and the white font do remind me of the Wal-Mart logo. It’s a little boring. Do they say anywhere why they changed? I didn’t have a problem with the old one.

The logo looks nice, but this hardly constitutes a “rebranding”. They very well may have gone through a rebranding, but branding is much more than a logo.
The fact that they kept the tag leads me to believe that they have kept the same core idea and intend to provide the same service to the customer in the same way. Looks like a facelift; a tasteful one, but if this is the extent of their image update, it hasn’t gone far enough.

the new one looks generic. font issues aside i liked the impact of the original logo better. the tacky, yellow stopping power, the tacky price tag and the tacky font.
this is way to sophisticated for best buy. they’re moving on up in the world i guess. A for effort on the new logo, it’s a nice exploration but I’m not sold on it. Too bad the execs were.

I officially like it. Nice updated modern typeface, I like the new subtle blue color change. I also like the more laidbackness. I hate bestbuy stores because of how at your face they are when you walk in. Maybe this retailer will calm down a bit!
Good show.

Appreciate all the conversation.
If you want to read my comments on this test which is broader than the logo by the way, you can read about it on my blog, http://www.barryjudge.com.

The old one positioned BB as a big retailer with cheap prices. This new logo says doesn’t mesh well with the words Best Buy or the icon. While I think aesthetically, it looks nicer I don’t know if it’s working or not.

Best Buy are and have been a global company.
This is more appropriate in that sense…
There are copyright issues with using the tag in
other countries as well…
And it’s not a modified version of Klavika…idiots.

One of the few recent re-brandings I like… don’t have best buy here tho
October 29th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I liked the old one better. It portrayed the “price Tag” as best buy look.
The new one is boring

Wow! I cannot believe they changed it. Bad idea I believe.
